How to Check a Home’s Fire Hazard Severity Zone in Los Angeles

Published November 5, 2026 · Lianna Danielyan, REALTOR® · Equity Union

Figures and rules in this post are as of November 6, 2026, from the sources linked below. Check the source for any later update.

California’s Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) maps Fire Hazard Severity Zones (FHSZ) across the state, rated Moderate, High or Very High. The zones are based on factors like vegetation, terrain and weather, and the State has recently updated them.

How to look up an address

  • Go to the OSFM Fire Hazard Severity Zones page (link below) and open the map viewer.
  • Enter the address to see the zone and whether it is in a State or Local Responsibility Area.
  • In the City of Los Angeles, ZIMAS also shows hazard information for each parcel.

Why the zone matters

  • It is reported on the Natural Hazard Disclosure statement given to buyers.
  • Homes in Very High zones can be subject to defensible-space and building-material rules.
  • Insurers may consider it when pricing or offering coverage.

Many hillside areas south of Ventura Boulevard, in the Santa Monica Mountains, and near Malibu and Calabasas are in mapped fire zones. Check each address on the official map rather than assuming.
